Lars Hjortshøj on the iconic role: It was not gone in a day

Lars Hjortshøj has played so many different roles in the sketchshows as 'Casper and the Mandrilaftalen' and 'Live from Bremen', as well as in the shows and movies that he did not have numbers on them.

But there is one role that particularly distinguished for the comedian, who right now can be seen as 'Major Lars' on TV3 and Viaplay.

- What role is your best?

- There is one or the other with Robert Dølhus-the character from 'Far from Las Vegas', because he was so carried out unsympathetic. What an idiot. And yet he was everyone's darling. I don't think you could get away with a character in the day that just went around and said 'shut up, bitch'.

- it was accepted because he had developed mentally as a teenage boy, but his popularity also lay in that he did and said things you might not. He total to children in Africa and kept the money to themselves. Nevertheless, he was not only unsympathetic. He also had a vulnerability.

- How did you get the role?

- It was never meant that I should have played it. We had just made 'Casper and the Mandrilaftalen', and I think we had a two-three pieces inside to the casting for the role of Robert. So it was on a cancel, I got it. It has often been in my working life.

The popular characters in 'Far from Las Vegas'. From left front: Sofie Stougaard, Casper Christensen, Katja Kean and Iben Hjejle. At the rear from the left: Lars Hjortshøj, Klaus Bondam, and Frank Hvam.

- How prepared are you for the role?

- Robert Dølhus is actually composed of two characters from the reality. We had an it-man, where we worked on the Metronome, and Casper and I saw him one day from the distance of the Tivoli gardens, where he sat and ate alone in the Ditch. There was something epic about it.

And then I had a colleague at Danmarks Radio, which also is good friend of my wife, who is autistic. And something of the diktionen I have taken from him. The way Robert Dølhus speak on. 'To be the, as it is, there is the who have done something.' He has a peculiar version of the Danish language. And so I gave the just full pedal.

- What was the coolest at the role?

- It was that it had something filter. And there were so screwed up for the character the longer we came in the seasons. The unsympathetic poop on him gave really something, and gave very much attention.

- I can remember that there was made t-shirts that said 'shut up, bitch', as some children had in school. What was it like for some parents who let their children see the 'Far from Las Vegas'? It would never do today. It was totally sick with crazy sexual references to children and asian and young boys. It was not a børneudsendelse.

- What was the most difficult part of the role?

- I would usually eat in very many scenes. And when you take it again and again and again, so smoking that much food down. And he had some sick food habits, it was fucking disgusting sometimes. A grillpølse stabbed in a roulade for example. And then to have to take such a scene 15-20 times. It was disgusting. There was also a whole section where he lived of the mackerel. It was hard, I thought.

It was also hard having to override all the good taste and ethics, and the vanity and just planing away. I learned really just to be available for the project, I had said yes to and make it was. I did not say no to anything.

- Is there a scene you love in particular?

- I think there is a scene where Sussi la Cour, previously Katja Kean, ed.) to cut me, where I have her tits right in the face. It was a decidedly choreography, for she stood with a pair of scissors, and every time she moved, I had to turn the me to follow with her tits. That all went up in a higher unity between our two characters.

- What has that role meant for your career?

- It is a character that people still refer to. So it must be one or the other. I had made a very standup and many of the skits before, but he was the first character, I had the opportunity to develop over a longer period of time. And I learned it and have been able to use later on.
