all of Italy in these weeks is fighting against the Coronavirus. The most difficult test since the war. Especially in the North, particularly Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto and Emilia Romagna, today, is paying the price dear, or too high.
By day in the newspapers we have to read whole pages of obituaries. And certainly not going to be able to remove from the memory the images of the vehicles of the Army that lead the way from Bergamo, the coffins of the dead. The death of so many of our fellow citizens is a pain that, unfortunately, continues to renew itself each day. Not the cold numbers, the ones that are crying are people with a name, a surname, a history. They are stories of families who lose all that is dear and to whom I express my sharer and emotional closeness and that of the entire government.
On your newspaper told every day the pages of the history of your community wound. The responsible contribution that it is giving the system information deserves to be publicly noted. Especially the local newspapers - the ones that best know the social fabric of its territory - are establishing themselves as anchors to which the Country relies on these moments of loss.
I Want to be honest, as I have always been from the first day of this disaster: it is still early to say when we emerge. The measures adopted on the recommendation of the technical committee, I have already said, require time before they can unfold their effects. What we must now do all of them, excluding no one, is to continue to adhere to the rules, with patience, responsibility and confidence. It is a gesture of altruism and also for their loved ones, for the most fragile and vulnerable. Now as never before those who remains at home has the possibility to contribute concretely to the realization of the “common good”.
In truth, I am aware that to stay in the home for a long time is not easy. But it's a sacrifice small in comparison to the extraordinary efforts of the many doctors and nurses every day in the trenches, putting their own lives at risk to save that of others. To them that at this time are in the ward, in hospital, on an ambulance, or just at home-damaged hair from a long shift of work, I entrust my most grateful thought, that combines, I am sure, that of all the italians.
we do Not escape the difficult conditions in which they operate, we have never ignored, and we do not intend to turn the gaze from the other side. With the ministers, with the head of the civil protection Borrelli and with the commissioner Arcuri we are working day and night to face and overcome these difficulties.
contacts with the health facilities and the local authorities, first and foremost, the Presidents of the Region, are constants. In the next few hours new doctors and nurses come in all Lombardy and in the other provinces that are found in most suffering, as Piacenza. Among them there are also many doctors from all over Italy have joined the task force set up by the Government.
We are enhancing the existing hospitals, and we are making new ones. So will it be the hospitals of Brescia, Cremona, Piacenza, and all other hospital facilities that are in full emergency.
To Bergamo will soon be operating the field hospital of the national Alpine association. And in Bergamo last week, at the Hospital Papa Giovanni XXIII have already been 27 doctors and 4 nurses in the military.
Grows and also the number of masks, and protective equipment distributed, starting by the health professionals. Dozens of Italian companies are back their production to respond to the emergency. We are doing everything we can to increase still more the places of intensive therapy in the most affected areas in the Lombardy, Piedmont, Emilia Romagna, Veneto, and to get new fans to the lungs, the respiratory machinery. In Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Piedmont from the beginning of the emergency we are now able to increase the places of intensive therapy, respectively, 141%, 167% and 135%. It is still not enough, I'm well aware, but we hope that this support - which will follow other - could alleviate at least some of the hard work of our doctors and nurses who tirelessly fight in the wards of hospitals and in the laboratories of the research centres, and helping to save human lives.
these days I'm hearing the statutory auditors of Bergamo, Brescia, Cremona, and Piacenza, in the first line, as many mayors throughout Italy, with courage and determination, are facing this test always at the side of their fellow citizens. I asked for information on the difficulties that are going through the persons with disabilities and their families, we are helping to support with the increase of work permits and the establishment of special leave. We are giving maximum attention to the elderly in nursing homes, because they are not left alone.
To the auditors, I have addressed a sincere thank you to all those who with their work are ensuring that the goods and services essential for our community: the workers, the tellers and the cashiers of the supermarkets, road hauliers, pharmacists, law enforcement, and the fire department.
the Whole Government, the whole ministerial team is at their side to assist them, support them and help them to overcome this difficult time, and to divide the Nation. We intervene with extraordinary measures to revive the economy, we will use all the useful tools in support of businesses, families, workers and self-employed persons, and of all the sectors of activity most affected by the emergency. So that at the end of this emergency the whole of Italy, and with it the North, the driving force of the Country, it can return stronger than before.
Even in this time of emergency, the Republic is at the service of its readers.
