RBB announces tough austerity program - 100 jobs will be cut

Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB) is planning savings measures of around 49 million euros. The need for this arose from the "mismanagement of the past few years", the broadcaster announced on Wednesday in Berlin. 100 jobs are to be cut by 2025.

The RBB plunged into an unprecedented crisis in the summer of 2022 when media reports raised accusations of nepotism and wastefulness against the top. The entire management team at that time is no longer in office. At the center of the scandal are the director Patricia Schlesinger, who was fired without notice, and the chief supervisor of the station, Wolf-Dieter Wolf. Both rejected allegations.

The Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating, the presumption of innocence applies. Courts of auditors are also currently checking, and an external law firm is also working on a report.

For RBB it is now clear what the consequences of the scandal will be. By the end of 2024, around 41 million euros would have to be taken out of the plan. In addition, there would be a further eight million euros, which the former management intended for 2023 and 2024 as a savings target, but were not backed by measures.

One of the newly planned measures is that the program management wants to reduce its spending by a total of 21 million euros compared to the previous plan for 2023 and 2024. When it comes to television, RBB will focus on the program between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The costs for personnel and organization are to fall by almost eleven million euros by the end of 2024. The production and operations management is to reduce its budgets by seven million euros over the course of 2023 and 2024.

Director Katrin Vernau emphasized that the course correction was "a feat of strength, but urgently needed". Without decisive action in the current contribution period, the RBB would “look into a financial abyss by the end of 2024 at the latest”.

According to the information, there should be a new program scheme from 2024. The further financing of the ARD "Mittagsmagazin" in the first one can no longer be done on its own, it said. Since the cooperation with ZDF is very important to ARD, there will be talks between ARD and ZDF about the continuation.
