Pennsylvania shelter identifies mysterious animal as coyote

Every mystery has an answer.

A Pennsylvania wildlife hospital has announced the results from a DNA test for a strange-looking animal it had been treating. The animal was brought in to be treated in January but it fled the facility and is still not being relocated.

Wildlife Works Mount Pleasant shared the latest update on its Facebook page. The post stated that it had just received the results from the DNA test, which confirmed that the animal was 100% coyote. This confirms that the animal in question is not missing.

Wildlife Works specializes on the treatment of deer, raccoons, and mammals as well as other rabies vector species.

Before the animal was identified, the hospital had posted information about the coyote previously on Jan. 24.

Wildlife Works stated in the post that they are still waiting on the results from the DNA test. He is now doing much better and is more alert than he was when he arrived at us last week. Although he is not showing aggression, he is now more defensive.

A photo of the coyote was also included in the post, though it is unclear what its species looks like from the image. It was very thin and malnourished, making it difficult to determine if it was a coyote. It also had a lot of missing fur.

The coyote fled the facility at the end of January. Fox 8 reports that the coyote was capable of chewing through a screen and window screen to escape from the facility. The animal's area of care was damaged by a hospital worker.

Doctors treated the coyote for mange before it escaped.
Workers from the hospital set traps in this area. In the hope that the coyote would seek refuge from the cold, they also left barn doors open nearby and gave them plenty of hay. It has yet to be seen in the area.
