The news was greeted with joy and astonishment by Nicolò Govoni and from all of the NGOS Still I Rise, which is committed on a daily basis to ensure that informal education, safety and protection of adolescent refugees on the island of Samos, Greece, and in the opening of the first International School for refugee children in Turkey. "It is the greatest honor of my life so far. Are short of words," says Nicolò Govoni. "It's a dream come true, a dream that I would never have hoped to realize. I don't know what to say. Who is Nicolò Govoni. Class of 1993, is a writer and a human rights activist and a native of Cremona. Begins his first mission to volunteer at the age of twenty years, when part at a time to a small village of India, and the orphanage Dayavu Boy's Home: here she remained for four years of his life, managing to change the fate of the children and the orphanage itself. The commitment of Still I Rise to the refugee children. Still I Rise is an international non-governmental organization, founded in 2018: the goal is to offer education, safety and protection of minor refugees in the warmer places of the overall migration. The NGO is fully independent, thanks to private donations and does not receive funding from governments, the European Union and supranational organisations. Activities begin at Samos, Greece, where there is one of the worst hotspots of Europe: built by the Greek government, funded by the European Union and designed to accommodate 648 people, today it has a population of approximately 7,200 inhabitants. Of these, approximately 49% is composed by women and children, including more than 400 unaccompanied minors without adequate protection, and protection (given the UNHCR up-to-date to 4 February).
The educational program. From its founding, Still I Rise has provided informal education to thousands of adolescents vulnerable through Mazì, the first centre for adolescent refugees from the island. Offers a variety of classes, daily meals, psycho-social support, legal support and protection of children: The educational programme provides lessons of English, Greek, mathematics, art, history, geography, computer, theatre and music, but also european culture, women's rights, emotional intelligence. The centre is first and foremost a safe haven, from 8.45 am to 19 pm, from Monday to Friday, welcomes and protects approximately 130 children, offering all day breakfast and lunch. The criminal complaint in the field of Samos. the terrible conditions of The field of Samos and the degradation constant in which children refugees are forced to live have prompted Still I Rise to present to June 2019, a criminal complaint against the management of the reception Centre and the identification of the island, to condemn the human rights violations perpetrated against the population of minors not accompanied that lives in the field. The complaint also came to the European Parliament, and two parliamentary questions to the signature of Pietro Bartolo, the first and Laura Ferrara, Isabella Adinolfi, Rosa D'amato, the second, and also of the Italian Parliament.
The cause at the European Court of human Rights. In December, 2019, the NGO has promoted, together with the legal department of the Greek Refugee Council, ASGI, and the support of Doctors Without Borders, a lawsuit filed to the European Court of Human Rights to safeguard the physical and psychological integrity of the five minor refugees unaccompanied. In expectation of the judgment, the Court has ordered that an immediate solution for the timely transfer of the five children in a safe place, recognizing on the island of Samos, the failure to comply with art. 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights, which enshrines the prohibition of torture and degrading treatment.
other projects in progress. In line with the primary objective to offer education and protection to children, Still I Rise is currently working to bring its support in other areas of the world and is involved in the initiation of the First International School for children refugees in Turkey, where there are 3.5 million refugees from syria and afghanistan, of which 70% are women and children. The objective on a global scale is to reach and recover the minor refugees in Countries such as Kenya and Mexico, where there are constant violations of human rights and fundamental failures on the part of the authorities in providing for the needs of the child.
