The descent of the pocket book

The German book market is shrinking, 2018 1.4% less books were sold than in the previous year. A Segment felt the decline of the paperback. Here, the sales declined within a year to 4 percent. The publishers back to the range for many years. In 2005, appeared in Germany, 6101 new paperback title in 2015, only 4457, 2018, only to 3596. All of the major publishing houses have scaled down production, such as an Overview of the "book reports". Between 2016 and 2018, the number of new titles dropped in the paperback at Goldmann/btb 336 to 310, in the case of fishermen from 263 to 204, in the case of Piper from 234 to 199, in the case of dtv from 253 to 197, Rowohlt from 216 to 191 and in the case of Suhrkamp/Insel from 180 to 165.

Switzerland

Switzerland is one of The different; here there is no absolute, but relative Numbers. So the paperback of 2014 the total turnover of the Swiss book market by 20.3%, 2016 and 18.9 and 2018, only 18.6 percent. The largest Swiss publisher, Diogenes, has reduced the number of outlets in the TB-novelties hardly noticeable: 62 (2006) to 61 (2016) and 60 titles in the past year. Clearly, the numbers have crashed (here, new editions are included in the count of older title): in 2006, Diogenes 4.9 million pocket books, 2016 to 2.1 million and in 2018, only 1.8 million. Upward, in contrast, No&But. The publisher produces in a year, around 500'000 pocket books, but with annual growth rates of 5 to 10 percent. The half a Million copies are distributed on 16 titles; in 2014 there were 10.

reasons

there are Two reasons for the shrinkage process, beyond the General buyer migration in the book market. For a smooth customer on the E-Book (the Figures of which the current statistics are not taken into account), to other publishers increase the number of titles in Paperback that are similar cheap to manufacture, but for which higher prices are required and will be accepted. But also the retail prices for paperback books has risen in the last few years. The long in force in Germany "purchase hurdle" of € 9.99 for a paperback is always skipped more frequently. 49.2 percent of sold bag cost 2017 books for under 10 euros, so it was 2018, only 35 per cent, all the others were more expensive.

Also, Diogenes has responded to increases to the decline in the sales figures with the price. Today, all the TB-novelties are about 13 Swiss francs, and also the price of the Reprints will be raised.

the popularity of the novel has not lost, is still long: 2018 1200 title reached a five-digit circulation. And the most successful book in all forms of Sales was a paperback: John Streleckys "Café on the edge of the world". (Editorial Tamedia)
