Movie review: Ångestladdade idolskildringen Vox lux a cinematic milestone

The one that can bring new audio-visual life to vapenvåld, driving and New York's skyscrapers – a kind of gesällprov for an american director, screenwriter – are always dubbed into filmkonstens new hope.

It gets harder and harder the less space there is for the romanticism around weapons and cars. Brady Corbet succeed in all cases, the tear of all three, within twenty minutes of their strange, ångestladdade nutidssaga “Vox lux” with the help of the minimal amount of splatter, a hypnotic, an ambulance ride and a New York city wrapped up in the released trettiotalsmörker.

the First part of the movie is about how schoolgirl Celeste becomes a pop star after an earthquake and slowly harden of fame, painkillers, Swedish producers and hotellsex.

In the second part, she makes a comeback as a hardened, hard but never calculated superstar who keeps a long theoretical exposition for his daughter if konsumismens development, drinking wine from plastic cup and fill the stadiums with screaming fans at the same time as muslim terrorists in Croatia massacring tourists at a beach, wearing just the glittermasker that once made her famous.

. Or interesting. Or pretentious. Or brilliantly. Perhaps all this in an undigested, but readily sinnesvidgande grog.

What the film does not offer is what you might be longing for when you go to the cinema; a concentrated experience. Focus. A much-needed break from the fragmented, connected reality where terror, politics and celebrity gossip, get the same emphasis.

What impresses is rather how exactly Corbet, who previously made ”The childhood of a leader”, reproduces precisely the fragmentation and stress. There are a genomlåg tone through all of it, a meanness in people and in environments that Scott Walker's soundtrack gives a bizarre, sacral screw. It will make the “Vox lux” to a milestone, whether you like it or not.

The dumb, the cold, the brutal relations, a the cheap tricksen can alienate anyone, but the underlying rage that Natalie Portman manifesting the adult Celeste is not cold, but white-hot.

celeste's provocative advice to the terrorists is to worship her instead of some old gisten God, and during the protracted, few slutkonserten begin to understand what she means.
