In short, it is an experience of "restorative justice" - the most innovative thinking about the composition of the conflict between the State, the offender and the victim - that has the aim of offering a contribution, and a path to repair the social damage caused to the community through work projects, socially useful and voluntary. A justice that focuses on the person, in the threefold form of the victim, guilty and corrupted, and whose cornerstone is the protection of the personal dignity.
Opened in 1987, the institute of Milan now houses around 1300 inmates with sentences of remaining longer than five years. The rooms, originally single, host a maximum of 2 people. The prison has always been characterized by a plurality of circuits, the prison services, with a strong presence of persons belonging to the organised crime and suffering from diseases.
In the Prison of Opera, the association is aimed not only to prisoners and their families, but providers, prisons, social workers, judges, surveillance, and lawyers, organizing interviews with the inmates, many of whom at the special department of the San Paolo Hospital; dealing with the direct distribution of clothing and hygiene products; distributing eyeglasses; paying small amounts of money to prisoners in need; anticipating their tuition fees by tutoring students; sbrigando administrative practices; organizing reading groups, courses, and movies.
