A young girl, Lucie, is found wandering on a deserted gårdsvei, crying and with a body that indicates many years of captivity and torture. We don't know what has happened, or what she has managed to escape from.

We follow the same girl several years later, where she, together with her only friend, Anna, to try to uncover what happened to Lucie when she was little. Who abducted her, and not the least; why?

We shall not say more, other than that some questions do not seek answers to. For what awaits our young heroines, is pure evil set in the system.

One of the most important precondition for a successful horror, is gjerningspersoner that scares the crap out of you. And it has "Martyrs" . Think Dr. Mengele meets Joseph Fritzl.

"the Martyrs" goes straight to the point and røsker you out of the couch and into his hellish universe. The film's perhaps greatest strength is that it is a solid history in the bottom. The script is both efficient, original and smart, and delivers some surprising twists.

But it is dark and nihilistic. It helped certainly not that director Pascal Laugier wrote the script while he supposedly was seriously depressed, bordering on suicidal.

And it is brutal. The massive klagekoret against the film's depiction of violence and suffering have not abated with the years, and the film will probably stand out as some of the more irascible which has been shown to the general public.

Laugier has also stated that the film is not about suffering. But about the pain. Oh well, both will probably we say.

The ultimate nightmare

the Film can be perceived to be split in two. In the first part of the film we follow the girls ' looking at the Lucies alleged perpetrators. Lucie finds out the house she believes to have been held captive. In the house lives, however, what seems to be a typical kjernefamilie. She remembers correctly?
