A way to not die: the story of the film . It is 1951, the war had just ended. If Italy is in tatters, Africo is the last spit before of incivility: there is no light, nor a road linking the towns on the coast, nor a doctor. When a woman dies in childbirth because the doctor is not coming, and explodes with anger. Led by Peppe (Francesco Colella), the inhabitants of Africo decide to build the road by themselves. But there are those who are opposed to: the mayor of the Navy (Francesco Siciliano), who despises and ignores the poverty, and Don Totò (Sergio Rubini), who wants to keep the power in the territory. The fight gets rough and the vicissitudes of the construction of the road become desire for redemption. “In my films, I often dwell on suggestions - says Calopresti - here, however, I have dedicated myself to the facts: the need to build a road”.
