Brazilian leader admitted in hospital with persistent hiccups

According to Bolsonaro, he was at the Armed Forces Hospital Brasilia and was "feeling good." Bolsonaro was to remain under observation at the hospital for between 24 and 48 hours.

Bolsonaro, who has struggled to speak on several occasions over the past weeks, said that he experiences recurring hiccups.

Bolsonaro stated that he had been experiencing hiccups for five days and apologized to all who listen to him. Bolsonaro suggested that medications prescribed following dental surgery could be the reason. "I get hiccups 24 hours per day."

Bolsonaro apologised again the next day during his weekly Facebook Live session for not being able express himself well because of week-long hiccups.

In 2018, the president sustained serious injuries on the campaign train. He was stabbed in his abdomen and suffered severe internal bleeding. Since the attack, he has had several operations that were not related to it.

A congressional inquiry into Bolsonaro's administration's handling the pandemic has put Bolsonaro under increasing pressure. Recent polls suggest that he may lose the next 2022 election.

In a 20-minute conversation with the president of Brazil in Brasilia on Tuesday night, his supporters repeatedly asked him to take care of his health.
