A new study by the University of Warwick helps to finally shed some light on the matter: the results, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, indicate that infants left in "despair"by themselves, without being taken in the arm, do not develop behavioural problems in the achievement of 18 months of age. The study was conducted in the United Kingdom and involved 178 infants and their mothers, followed by researchers since birth for almost two years. In this period, women were asked to write down how often consolassero the children in the event of a crisis, crying, while the children were subjected to a series of tests to the achievement of 3 and 18 months, to ascertain the presence of behavioural disorders and the level of attachment to the maternal figure.

None of the tests detected differences between the children consulates often and the ones left to cry. Looking at the responses of the participants it was found that in two thirds of the cases the mothers have changed their behavior with the passing of the months. An approach that, according to the authors of the study would help to teach children to become more self-reliant, and then to cry less, day and night.

“We have to give more credit to the parents and the children,” says Dieter Wolke, at the head of the team that carried out the study. “Most of the parents are adapted intuitively over time, and understand how to respond to the needs of their own children, and waits for a while before intervening when they hear them cry and leave to the children the opportunity to learn how to behave.
