The co-founder of the Twitch platform, American entrepreneur Emmett Shear, announced this Monday that he would become the new interim leader of OpenAI. The start-up, behind the artificial intelligence ChatGPT, dismissed its boss on Friday with a bang. Emmett Shear, 40, running the video streaming platform until March.
“I accepted this position because I believe OpenAI is one of the most important companies there is today. When the board of directors informed me of the situation and asked me to take on this role, I did not take the decision lightly,” he commented. His decision was made “within a few hours,” said Emmett Shear on X, referring to “the opportunity of a lifetime.” He also plans to launch an independent investigation within 30 days to shed light on the dismissal of Sam Altman and the upheavals at OpenAI.
These announcements come after a tumultuous weekend: the OpenAI board of directors created a surprise on Friday by announcing the dismissal with immediate effect of Sam Altman following “a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he had not always been frank in his communications with the board, hindering his ability to fulfill his responsibilities. This body no longer has “confidence in its ability to lead OpenAI,” she then added.
