Officials from the state and city urge NYE safety as thousands descend on New Orleans

New Orleans is gearing up for a busy holiday weekend.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya cantrell spoke with Shaun Ferguson, chief of police. She expressed optimism that the city could move through the omicron field surge without having to go into another shutdown. However, her office is currently in discussions about additional safety measures. She stated earlier this month that reintroducing a mask mandate in advance of Mardi Gras is not out of the question.

She states that this contagious variant "not one that kills, but disrupts"

Leaders encourage people to wear masks, get vaccinated and have booster shots in order to stay safe. People who travel feel more at ease in cities with high safety standards say so.

"We've been there almost two years. Cantrell stated that they have seen the movie many times. It's a concern but it can be masked and vaccinated.

Ferguson said that police will do "what we always do" in handling large crowds. Ferguson says that police will be visible on horseback, bikes and motorcycles in the city.

The 2022 Allstate Sugar Bowl and its festivities are scheduled to continue as planned at Caesar's Superdome. However, Louisiana is reporting record numbers of COVID-19 cases. This is due to the contagious omicron variant.

Few people cancel reservations, and hotels are still at 90% capacity.

Doug Trager, The Maple Leaf talent buyer, stated that "New Year's Eve would be our big reopening." "Really, I was looking forward to it, but it just doesn’t make sense right now."

The French Quarter is home to CNN's Don Lemon and other Grammy-winning artists. Thousands of people from across the country will be expected to line the streets in support of the Fleur De Lis Drop and Sugar Bowl Parade.
