Patio of the Myrtles
Although it is the newest of the Spanish chamber ensembles, the Cosmos Quartet performs at the Patio de los Arrayanes at 10:30 p.m. with works by Debussy, Ravel, and Sotelo. The Cosmos Quartet, a young ensemble, approaches two of the most iconic works of French chamber music. Debussy and Ravel's quartets are separated by a decade. Debussy (from 1893) seems more to be looking back at the past than what is ahead of him; Ravel (from 1903), while it uses cyclical elements as well, expresses itself with a mature language. MauricioSotelo, the Festival's resident composer, shows his Quartet No. 3. The universe of jondo is always a reference point for his music. In this instance, it seems to be the sound of flamingo guitars. It is, in the words of the composer, "a sound geometry that metaphorically represents the inextricable unity between our daily lives and the vibrating music we make". He thinks of the guitar and how it can move the chaotic air of bulerias when performed by a string quartet.
