Local elected officials responsible for transport are calling for a minister to handle their files

The Group of Authorities Responsible for Transport (Gart), which brings together local authorities organizing public transport in France, called on Tuesday for the appointment of a full-time minister for transport. The reshuffle that took place last Thursday confirmed the appointment of only 14 ministers with broad scope, including Christophe Béchu to the Ecological Transition, the supervisory ministry for Transport. Secretaries of State and delegate ministers must still be appointed soon.

But representatives from several sectors, including energy, housing and the civil service, have protested against the absence of a dedicated minister to date. “Mobility is a daily issue and moving is a necessity for all our fellow citizens,” Gart said in a press release.

“The absence of a dedicated minister for transport would demonstrate a contradiction with the stated objectives,” believes the organization, citing as examples the “greening of bus and coach fleets”, the “putting into service of metropolitan regional express networks (SERM)” and the “realization of the single transport ticket”.

“The climate emergency does not wait and its preeminence requires a minister able to continue the dialogue with all mobility stakeholders,” insists Gart, which had already shared its dismay in June 2022 at the absence of a minister for the sector. The appointment of Clément Beaune, Minister for Transport in the previous government and until now not renewed, only took place on July 4, more than two months after the re-election of Emmanuel Macron as President of the Republic.
