With Amazon, the figures are quickly impressive. “To get through the holiday period, we are going to hire 6,500 additional temporary workers,” Frédéric Duval, general manager of Amazon.fr, explains to Le Figaro. The Christmas period is busy in terms of activity for the e-commerce giant, which leads to significant logistical constraints. This peak, which represents around a third more activity, pushes Amazon to increase its workforce by a third in order to manage the influx of orders.
While many sectors report tension to recruit the workers they lack, this is not the case for the American giant. “We have no problem recruiting,” says Frédéric Duval. Amazon has a good brand image and we offer good working conditions and remuneration. » And, adds the manager, “France is a country that matters to Amazon”.
Sometimes criticized for its impact on small businesses and taxes paid in France, the champion of e-commerce claims 10 billion euros of investments in the country over the period 2010 to 2022, in its offices in the Paris region. , its 37 logistics sites and its IT infrastructures. Its impact is especially very strong in terms of jobs. “We employ 20,000 permanent workers in France, and also generate 77,000 induced jobs, via our supply chain and the companies that sell their products through our marketplace,” further specifies the boss of the group in France. And the growth in numbers has been very strong in recent years. The group has hired no less than 10,000 employees on permanent contracts over the last five years, driven by the surge in e-commerce during the Covid period.

Recruitment is all the easier because it is carried out on a very large geographical scale. Thus, the 6,500 temporary workers are called upon to work in one of Amazon’s logistics sites in France, which are scattered throughout all regions of the country. Above all, the group is able to engage people who were in difficult situations. “In our distribution center created two years ago near Metz, which has 4,000 jobs, 76% of employees are former job seekers, and 60% are former long-term job seekers,” specifies the manager. And it offers them perspectives.
The final asset to attract candidates is that joining Amazon can lead to a long-term lease. “Some of our employees on permanent contracts in our logistics sites started as temporary workers,” underlines Frédéric Duval, who is pleased, personally, to have worked for the group for eighteen years.
