did you Know that adventsljusstaken is almost 100 years? That the christmas gifts were handed out already in the 1600s, and that the christmas tree comes from Germany. Here are some of our most common symbols and traditions as we celebrate christmas.

Jul 2018: Why do we celebrate christmas

in the Middle of darkest december, the holiday season as a relief. We cuddle to it with good food, time off and meet with family and friends. Christmas gifts, mulled wine and christmas lights. Yes, there is no end to all the traditions and nice things. For many, christmas has developed into a cultural event rather than a christian celebration. It is Jesus's birth that is the basis for the celebration has probably the most track, but everything else then, where do the traditions come from anyway?

Christmas celebration in Sweden has elements from pagan, christian, nordic and germanic traditions from the viking age onwards. When Sweden was converted to christianity in the 1100s mixing the pagan traditions with the christian. Most of the traditions we have today have their origin from the 1800 - and 1900-century.

Traditions of course different in all families but christmas is often associated with the Lucia celebrations at the nursery, julmarknadsbesök, gingerbread , julstädning knäckkokning, julmust, adventsstjärnor, Donald Duck and the christmas food and it can be dizzying to know that some of our traditions stretching all the way back to the middle ages.

In the mid-1700s, they first dressed the christmas trees up in Sweden. The tradition came from Germany, where the first grantraditionerna was introduced already in the end of the 1500s. The christmas tree became common in Swedish homes until the end of the 1800s. In the top of the christmas tree put a star as the symbol of the star of bethlehem.
