American country music star Toby Keith died Monday night at the age of 62, according to a message posted on social networks.

The singer known for his 1993 hit Should've Been a Cowboy announced in 2022 that he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer, saying he needed time to "breathe, recover and relax." Keith “passed away peacefully...surrounded by his family. He fought with grace and courage,” the message read.

Over the course of his career, Toby Keith has released 19 studio albums, 2 Christmas albums and 5 compilation albums, selling more than 40 million copies. His most notable successes are Beer for My Horses (in 2003, in duet with Willie Nelson) and As Good as I Once Was (2005). Keith was awarded the National Medal of Arts by President Donald Trump in a closed-door ceremony alongside Ricky Skaggs on January 13, 2021.
