Roberto Heras: "Sports leadership is very similar to that of a company"

Roberto Heras, one of the great Spanish cyclists in all of history, explains to EXPANSIÓN his vision of leadership during the AC Hotels by Marriott Xacobea Route.

"It's a lot of responsibility to be a leader and that the whole team depends on what you do." There have been cases of runners who "physically go very well, but when they have the responsibility of the team they don't perform". This is how Roberto Heras Hernández (Béjar, Salamanca, 1974) speaks, one of the great Spanish professional cyclists.

Heras, who played for three professional teams (Kelme, US Postal and Liberty Seguros-Würth), won the Vuelta a España four times. He is the only cyclist to have achieved this milestone. Three of the victories were consecutive, between 2003 and 2005, after winning the first time, in 2000.

He is one of the participants in the XXXII Edition of the Ruta Xacobea AC Hoteles, where he has given an interview to EXPANSIÓN.

"Knowing that your sports career ends very soon, it is essential to be well advised, by someone who knows economics," explains Heras, who compares elite sport to being at the top of companies.

"Elite sport is a lot like leading a company," he says.

"A team leader has a huge responsibility" because "you have a team working for you." Same as "the leader of a company". And "the action and performance of a sports leader", like that of a company "has repercussions".

It is a level of "very high responsibility". "The most difficult thing" recalls Heras of his moments of maximum sports performance, "was to be up to the task". Reaching a Vuelta a España "as a favorite" is "difficult to manage". But in that, as in the company, "there are moments that are key". Only "the experience of having been there makes it better."

Today the Xacobea Route faces its second stage, between Logroño and Burgos. There will be 141 kilometers of route in which they will have to avoid mountain passes such as those of Alto de la Pradilla, of 3rd category.
