Celine Dion, suffering from a rare neurological disease, cancels her concerts scheduled until April 2024

Canadian singer Celine Dion is canceling forty concerts scheduled in Europe until April 2024 for health reasons, the organizers of her tour announced on Friday in a press release sent to AFP. Suffering from a rare neurological pathology against which she “continues her treatment”, they indicated, the Quebec star had already announced in December that she was canceling or postponing the concerts planned in Europe between February and July 2023.

The Quebec singer is suffering from an extremely rare disease, "the stiff man syndrome". Although treatments exist, this autoimmune disease can be very debilitating. This disorder, which is characterized in particular by progressive muscular rigidity, causes Celine Dion to have difficulty walking and prevents her from “using (her) vocal cords” as she would like, detailed the singer. “It saddens me enormously to have to tell you today that I will not be ready to start my tour in Europe again in February,” she continues, saying that she has “an excellent team of doctors” at her side. This tour was to resume at the end of February 2023 in the Czech Republic.

Celine Dion's last concert dates back to March 2020, in Newark (United States). After fifty concerts in North America, his world tour Courage World Tour had been interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic. This tour was never able to resume, the singer then indicating to suffer from muscle spasms. In December, when her pathology was announced, Celine Dion had already postponed her tour of Europe. The next concerts planned were at Paris La Défense Arena on September 1, 2, 5, 6, 9 and 10 “I am taking great pains to regain my strength, but the tours can be very difficult (...) It is better that we cancel everything now, until I am really ready to go back on stage, ”said the 55-year-old singer, quoted in the press release.

Stiff person syndrome (RPS) is a condition whose exact cause is unknown but likely autoimmune in origin. It strikes around one in a million people and causes severe pain and difficulty moving, preventing physically strenuous activities. “The medical team that accompanies Céline follows the evolution of the disease and its treatment”, indicated those around her.

“Tickets purchased for the 42 canceled dates will be refunded,” the tour organizers added. The singer felt that it was "not fair to continue to postpone the shows", not knowing when she would be able to go back on stage. She is one of the most popular artists in the world, famous among others for My Heart Will Go On, a 1997 song for the soundtrack of the movie Titanic.
