“An incredible journey”, the Spice Girls celebrate their 30th anniversary

“What began in 1994 has turned out to be an incredible journey, more wonderful than anything we could have imagined. Thank you to our fans for their support since day one,” the Spice Girls said on social media. A message accompanied by a video which must not have rejuvenated their fans since it was their first rehearsals in 1994, the starting point of five unknowns who would become legends.

The clip posted on social media shows Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell Horner, Emma Bunton, Mel Brown and Mel Chisholm dancing, singing, rehearsing and laughing together in their very first rehearsal, to the song Wannabe.

It all started with a casting call in London organized by Chris Herbert who wanted to create a quintet made up of young women capable of dancing and singing on stage. The rest belongs to “Girl Power!” In four years, the group will fill gigantic venues, sell nearly 40 million albums (for Spice (1996) and Spiceworld (1997)) and accumulate a massive fortune thanks to the sale of derivative products.

The media coverage of the phenomenon was so strong that the group ended up breaking up. In 1998, Geri Halliwell left the band and launched a solo career. In December 2000, the four remaining singers finally announced an indefinite hiatus.

Very often criticized by the celebrity press, they ultimately became the symbol of British culture. In 2012, the most famous girl band on the planet made a triumphant return by giving a spectacular performance during the closing ceremony of the London Olympic Games. To the cries of the crowd, the five stars arrived in London taxis bearing their effigy, before performing Wannabe then Spice Up Your Life, on the roofs of the cars which toured the stadium. They previously reunited in 2007 and 2008 for their last full world tour.

At the time of the Metoo movements, the Spice Girls were already offended by inappropriate remarks about women in their time. The documentary Spice Girls - Girl power: these girls who changed the world, shows certain moments when they did not hesitate to rebuke the perpetrators of sexist remarks. It’s their avant-garde side. Still followed by more than three million fans on social networks, the group has been casting doubt on its possible return to the stage for several months. In any case, this is what many fans are hoping for, according to the comments on the latest publications.
