A rare copy of the first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man sold for more than a million euros

A few cents... This is the price a Spider-Man fan paid for a comic book recounting his adventures in the 1960s. A rare copy of the first issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, sold at auction by Heritage Auctions , went for more than a million euros this year.

The comic strip, published in March 1963, reached a record amount of 1.38 million dollars (approximately 1.26 million euros). This is one of only two copies of The Amazing Spider-Man

Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man, created by artist Steve Ditko and writer Stan Lee, were first introduced in an August 1962 issue of the Amazing Fantasy anthology series, published by Marvel. The Amazing Spider-Man series launched a few months later. The first part of the series returns to the origins of Spider-Man and offers the first crossover between the hero and the Fantastic Four.

“At the beginning of the 1960s, Stan Lee looked for new ways of writing comics, new angles of attack. In 1961, with The Fantastic Four, he invented an atypical, unusual form of family. And the following year, he will offer something even more daring. The extraordinary innovation of Spider-Man, upon its release, was its adolescent hero. The adventure is that of a slightly strange youth, who does not feel in his place,” explained to Le Figaro Aurélien Vives, publishing manager and community manager at Panini Comics, in 2022 for the hero’s 60th birthday.
