Scotland's chief minister, Nicola Sturgeon, announced on Tuesday that she will call an "advisory" referendum on the region's independence from Britain on October 19, 2023.

In a speech to the Holyrood Home Rule Parliament, Sturgeon said the plebiscite must be "legal" and "constitutional", and will pose the same question to voters as the one held in 2014: "Should Scotland be an independent country? ?".
