The summer sale should start on 24 June. Monday on BFMTV, Bruno Le Maire, the minister of the Economy, said he is "favorable" to a "report" of "three or four weeks." Bercy will make its decision mid-week, but the date of July 15, holds the rope, according to multiple sources. The fixing of the date of the balances has been a source of conflict between the different federations of the trade. The Alliance of commerce, representing big brands, called for a start-up of balances no later than the 1st July. The Federation nationale de l'habillement (FNH), bringing together the independent traders, wanted a postponement to August 19.
An opposition revealing the dilemma of the traders: multiply the promotions and don't delay on the balances for stocks, and thus to recover the cash, or conversely, to preserve margins by not advertising the products, and pushing up the balances. Bercy has therefore cut the pear in two on the start date of the sales, which are expected to last four weeks. This seems to settle some as the other.
"It is a political compromise fair", responds Eric Mertz, president of the FNH. "We are satisfied that the balances will end early enough in August, then move to the season of re-entry", stresses Yohann Petiot, ceo of the Alliance of the trade. In the beginning of the déconfinement, the promotions are already very many in the stores and online, for stocks and a rebound in consumer spending. But the balances, which are held twice a year, subject to a special regulation, different from that of discounts: this is the only period where sales at a loss are allowed. This event is in the offing.
