Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are going to have in common, nearly 50% of their model

The Alliance between Renault , Nissan and Mitsubishi, whose difficulties have increased with the crisis health-related coronavirus, has presented on Wednesday a new strategy "aimed to improve the competitiveness and profitability of the three companies".

In this new model, "each member will become a referent in the regions where it has the best strategic asset and will act as a facilitator and support the competitiveness of the other," says the Alliance in a press release.

in addition, the manufacturers announced on Wednesday that they were going to develop and produce in common, "nearly 50%" of their models on the horizon 2025, in order to improve profitability.

This pooling should help reduce the costs and capital expenditures by up to 40% of the vehicles designed under this new scheme", announced the alliance franco-japanese in a press release.

These announcements come at a time when Nissan and Renault, already in great difficulties before the crisis caused by the pandemic Covid-19, must disclose on Thursday and Friday respectively economy plans severe, including site closures and job cuts.

The new strategy of the three companies presented Wednesday, will increase synergies and thus reduce costs in their various activities.

This strategy is based on a scheme of "leader-follower", with a business adviser, by model, by geographical area and by technology, the other two partners with the know-how and industrial capabilities of the leader.

Thus, "the synergies will increase in order to maximize the sharing of fixed costs, as well as the operation of the assets of each company," says the alliance.

The goal is to "strengthen the strategy of standardization, ( ... ), from the platform to the vehicle in full". The production of vehicles designed in common will be grouped in a single plant in the group "when it was (will be) considered to be relevant".

Regarding the geographic distribution, Nissan will become the referrer in China, North America and Japan. Renault for Europe, Russia, South America and North Africa. Mitsubishi Motors will be the leader for the countries of South-East Asia and Oceania.

Finally, the three companies will split the responsibilities on several key technologies.

Nissan will take orders on the autonomous control and the drives of future electric models developed on purpose-built platforms.

Renault will be in charge of connectivity technologies based on the Android operating system (operated in the world except in China, where Nissan will be a leader) and on the architecture of electric-vehicle electronics. The group at the diamond will also have the responsibility of powertrains for electric vehicles, derived platforms, thermal.

Finally, Mitsubishi will be the benchmark for technologies plug-in hybrid (gasoline-electric) vehicles of medium and large size.
