Federal statistical office : Treasury earns less in smokers

The German state has earned in the past year, less in smokers. Overall, tobacco was taxed at a value of 26.4 billion euros, as the Federal Statistical office announced on Monday in Wiesbaden. The were 1.7 percent more than in 2017. Of that 14.2 billion (minus 0.5 percent) went to the Treasury. The decline in the Wiesbaden-based authority led to the decline in cigarette sales - the most important Position among the tobacco products.

According to the statisticians the amount of taxed cigarettes fell by 1.9 per cent to 74 billion pieces. In the case of all other tobacco products there was an increase. Particularly significantly, sales of cigars and cigarillos rose - a plus of 6.5 percent to 3 billion pieces. Sales of pipe tobacco increased by 2.7 percent.
