Test Purchase is responding wroth. “This is the world on its head.” It is not yet clear whether other banks will follow.

The new rates for customers of Bpost go into effect on march 18. Holders of a b.compact current account can now have one time per month free of charge money pick up. Frédéric Jonnart of the bpost bank clarifies that the measure applies to the customers with the free b.compact account. It comes to a quarter of the customers (140.000). “The b-compact-accounts are focused on our 100 percent digital customers, who have little or no cash. The remaining customers do not pay for the collection of cash,” says spokesperson Jonnart yet.

The rules according to the VRT in conflict with an agreement that the banks in 2004, locks with bankenkoepel Febelfin. Twenty-four withdrawals per year from vending machines of the bank had to be free. In practice, counting some banks just something for a pick-up at a vending machine at another bank.

Follow other banks?

The question that arises now is whether other banks, their customers also costs are going to charge you to cash money. “That is difficult to predict, because it is a commercial choice,” says Isabelle Marchand of Febelfin, the Belgian federation of the financial sector. “Free doesn't exist, so the offer of free money withdrawals is a service. But due to the low interest rates, the cost structure of banks under pressure. So they need to find other income. The measure would in this can fit.”

Digital transition

“The pressure of the banks in the direction of a cashless and digital society is getting larger,” Test Purchase. “That transition over to quickly and too aggressively. A recent poll shows that 1 consumer 3 cash would continue to use. Not all shops accept debit cards. A large part of the population has cash need money.”

Test Purchase calls for free withdrawals of cash from the vending machines of the private bank and five free withdrawals per month at atms of competing banks.

cost increases

According to the consumer organisation have a lot of banks since the beginning of 2019 cost increases can be introduced. “Sometimes even with the price increases of up to 50%. Most of the increases relate to the cost of bank cards (mainly credit cards) of some bundles (annual lump sum), cash withdrawals and any action that the intervention of banks assumes.”
