Which slatted frames back sleepers should avoid

A slatted frame under the mattress ensures that the mattress is well ventilated and can release moisture downwards. Above all, it should make lying even more comfortable. But that is often not the case with springy models, according to a study by Stiftung Warentest.

According to the magazine "test", the classic was tested in Germany: a wooden slat with springy slats and adjustable foot and head sections. Ten mattresses were combined with slatted frames from the same supplier - with reasonably good results at first. Three of the ten combinations achieved the overall grade "good", the other seven cut off "satisfactory".

However, you have to make a comparison: there is hardly any real added value if the mattresses are on flexible instead of rigid frames. In fact, when lying on your back, they often worsen the supporting properties of the mattresses - and sometimes significantly so, according to the magazine "test" (10/2022 issue).

In the side position there are hardly any changes in most combinations, only three teams can show some improvements compared to the mattress on a firm base.

Therefore, the product testers advise: If you mainly sleep on your back and buy a good mattress, you should put it on a rigid slatted frame. Because at least the mattresses in the test were usually already constructed in such a way that they sensibly support sleepers even without grating.
