Where NRW promotes the faster expansion of city and railways

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is funding the faster expansion of railway and light rail projects with a further around 60 million euros. "Strong local public transport is of central importance for achieving the climate goals and a successful turnaround in mobility," said NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer (Greens) on Friday, October 14, in Düsseldorf. The aim is therefore to “increase public transport by at least 60 percent by 2030”.

The money will be used to support 45 other measures. The projects include the extension of the Bonn Stadtbahn via Niederkassel to Cologne or the reactivation of the Walsumbahn in and near Duisburg as well as planning for the 3rd construction phase of the U 81 in Düsseldorf.

Feasibility studies are also being funded: Rheinbahn AG, for example, would like to examine possible increases in capacity through longer trains, and in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district an extension of the existing light rail lines 3 and 18 from the Cologne city area is being examined.

The ministry explained that accelerating the planning is the basis of the sustainable mobility transition and will help to improve the offer for commuters. The enormous demand for the nine-euro ticket has shown that an expansion of the infrastructure is urgently needed.

The ministry has given the special-purpose associations for local transport in the Rhineland (NVR) and local transport in Westphalia-Lippe (NWL), the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) and the district governments of Düsseldorf and Arnsberg appropriate funding waivers totaling around 60 million euros for the 2022 funding program. A total of around 84.5 million euros were made available by the state to speed up planning services.
