“We are clearly at the beginning of an autumn and winter wave”

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) presented four measures in Berlin on Friday morning to counteract the corona virus this autumn and winter. "Corona is not so much in the foreground at the moment, other crises are more important. It's up to us to keep it that way and to avoid an additional stressful situation," said Lauterbach at a joint press conference with RKI boss Lothar Wieler in Berlin.

He stated: "We are clearly at the beginning of an autumn and winter wave." The number of cases in Germany and many other European countries increased. The German R value is also relatively high at 1.4. "This wave must be fought," said Lauterbach, who expects four-digit numbers of infections in the not too distant future. He named four measures:

1. In two weeks at the latest, start an "innovative vaccination campaign" in print and digital media, radio and television. Because the current 60,000 vaccinations a day are not enough. "We have large vaccination gaps." The adapted vaccines are available, there are no bottlenecks and a clear Stiko recommendation, according to Lauterbach.

2. Drug treatment can prevent severe courses. According to Lauterbach, Paxlovid reduces the likelihood of hospitalization in older people by 60 percent if taken on time. Chancellor Olaf Scholz also decided to take this drug when he was infected this week.

3. Better data should help to get a more accurate overview of the current situation. A first version of the pandemic radar has recently been published on the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) website. It combines all important data such as seven-day incidence, hospitalization rate and hospital capacities. Lauterbach is convinced: "In two weeks we will have much better data."

4. The measures possible through the new Infection Protection Act. It is crucial that the federal states have to make sure that the right time for the measures that are possible, such as the obligation to wear a mask indoors, is also taken, emphasized Lauterbach.

His conclusion: “This wave will not limit itself anytime soon. But we are well prepared and will have it under control. ”Corona will be one, but not the dominant topic in the coming months.

Wieler added to Lauterbach's remarks: "The pandemic is not over, even if we are in a relatively favorable situation. We must continue to take Covid-19 seriously. ”The seven-day incidence has been over 400 nationwide since Wednesday and 466 on Friday. This is the highest value since the beginning of August.
