Volker Beck demands speedy extradition of Attila Hildmann

Green politician Volker Beck has called for the speedy extradition of conspiracy ideologist Attila Hildmann, who is wanted for hate speech. “The rule of law must have an interest in enforcing its rights. Hildmann must be held criminally responsible," the president of the German-Israeli Society (DIG) told Stern magazine on Wednesday. Beck therefore assesses the chances of extradition as good. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has "no specific interest" in Hildmann.

Hildmann, who became known as a cook, is wanted on an international arrest warrant. According to a report by "Stern", he is currently hiding in the Turkish town of Kartepe, about an hour and a half south-east of Istanbul.

Hildmann had repeatedly threatened the former member of the Bundestag Beck. At a rally in July 2020, Hildmann is said to have said that if he were "Chancellor" the death penalty "by kicking eggs" should be introduced for Beck. Last year, Beck obtained an injunction against the conspiracy ideologue.

In the "Stern" interview, Beck criticized the work of the judicial authorities responsible for Hildmann: "As much as went wrong there, one doubts that everything was going right."

Hildmann, who was wanted by an international arrest warrant, appeared as a conspiracy ideologist during the corona crisis. The German judiciary accuses him of incitement to hatred and public incitement to commit crimes.

Last week, the "Stern" revealed that Hildmann, contrary to previous information, does not have Turkish citizenship, which would have made extradition more difficult. It is not known whether the federal government has since submitted an extradition request to Turkey. According to media reports, the Federal Criminal Police Office, the Federal Office of Justice, the Foreign Office and the Turkish authorities are said to be involved. Hildmann was born in West Berlin to Turkish parents but grew up with German adoptive parents.
