"Unrefreshed into autumn" - The current corona numbers explained for you

Even last weekend, the federal states or RKI did not provide any corona case numbers.

Germany starts the new week with an incidence of 294, which is 51 points more than a week ago.

In a week-on-week comparison, all federal states except Bremen are up.

The momentum is still clearly pointing upwards, it increasingly looks like the beginning of an autumn wave.

With a plus of 26 percent, the number of newly reported cases in the past week has risen particularly clearly in the vulnerable age group over 60.

525 corona deaths were reported to the RKI in the past week.

That's a 14-week low.

The RKI reported 57,267 new corona vaccinations on Friday – the highest daily value in a good two months.

The background is that the number of second boosters is increasing again, to 49,105 most recently.

The second booster is now recommended by Stiko risk groups and people over 60 years of age.

In the over 60s, 26 percent of citizens have been boosted twice - with the proportion fluctuating greatly from region to region. In the eastern German states of Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, as well as in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, it is between 10 and 20 percent, while in Bremen and Schleswig-Holstein it is more than 40 percent.

.

A vaccination rate of 26.1 percent means: 18 million over 60-year-olds (73.9 percent of 24.4 million) have not yet been boosted twice.

If the current vaccination rate of 27,400 second boosters per day were to remain (and if only over 60-year-olds received a second booster), the over-60 second booster rate would reach just 31 percent on November 1st and no more than 37 percent on January 1st Percent.

Even with an immediate and sustained doubling of the vaccination rate, measured on the 7-day average, we would still have an over 60 second booster rate of less than 50 percent at the turn of the year.

Only if the pace is increased even further, to the order of 100,000 second boosters over 60 per day, will coverage reach significantly more than half of the senior citizens in the autumn.

This means that if there is a pronounced autumn wave, and many experts expect that, it will affect a large part, if not a large majority, of seniors with suboptimal vaccination protection.

Every day we hear the new Corona case numbers. But what do they mean, where are we in the pandemic and what is the trend? Olaf Gersemann explains and evaluates the current figures briefly and concisely - every morning anew.
