“Ukraine is getting too much to die for, but too little to live on”

Is supplying the Leopard 2 tanks the right decision? Anne Will discussed this question with her guests on her talk show on Sunday evening. This time, the SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert, who campaigned for the Scholz course, and the party leader of the left Janine Wissler, who mocked the "military tunnel vision", were present.

The German-Ukrainian publicist Marina Weisband (B90/Greens) spoke live on the Chancellor's strategy. Georg Mascolo, journalist and author for the "Süddeutsche Zeitung" and Carlo Masala, professor for international politics at the Bundeswehr University in Munich, also discussed crossing "red lines" and Putin's position on a ceasefire.

The publicist Marina Weisband has so far not been able to identify a clear strategy on the part of the Chancellor. She made that clear at the beginning of the show: "The moment we keep saying we can't look into Olaf Scholz's head, we have a problem," says Weisband. She could not see the German intentions of the current policy and considered it a "gigantic problem."

Weisband himself observes the pattern "that we are constantly drawing new red lines". The SPD General Secretary contradicted the publicist: "The Chancellor never drew these red lines." He "never had to collect his own words," said Kühnert. Scholz put the “principles of his politics in the foreground”.

Carlo Masala had a different opinion on this point: Scholz "already drew red lines there." Masala's advice would be not to draw red lines in this conflict, "because we've seen again and again that whoever draws red lines will see himself with it at some point confronted that he has to clear them again." And Masala added: "Communicatively, it wasn't all a masterpiece."

"Olaf Scholz has repeatedly explained in recent months what the parameters are that he bases his decisions on," Kühnert continued to defend the Chancellor. "Perhaps it would be good if the SPD provided its coalition partners with better information," Masala suggested.

It is not important for Weisband to find out every step, every "water level report" from Scholz. She wanted to know Scholz' "goal". Their assumption was: The goal "of the USA and Germany" is that "this war lasts as long as possible, perhaps to weaken Russia".

Kühnert understands “the need to be able to understand decision-making processes.” However, he clearly contradicts the accusation that “there is no clear support for Ukraine”. With "now more than three billion euros in military material", Germany is currently in second place with Great Britain in terms of support.

Weisband countered: “Ukraine is being kept on a drip. Ukraine gets too much to die for, but too little to live on.”

As expected, left-wing politician Wissler fundamentally questioned Germany's military support: "We have to get out of this military tunnel vision." When Will asked how Wissler wanted to go about it without "militarily arming Ukraine", the politician only responded with a counter-question. The focus must be on the question: "How can you force Putin to the negotiating table?"

Wissler did not come to any conclusions, but the journalist Mascolo answered in her place. He doesn't know "what needs to be negotiated at the moment" because the "Russian position is very clear: They say the annexed areas cannot be discussed." Consequently, in the event of a ceasefire, the current annexed areas would be awarded to Russia, which " Armistice Line” would form the new border. "Ukraine cannot accept that and, to be honest, I don't think we can accept that either," Mascolo said.
