"Ukraine has shown that it would make the NATO alliance stronger"

Against the background of increasing Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, NATO once again pledged its unconditional support to Kyiv: "Our message is clear: NATO stands by Ukraine - for as long as necessary," said NATO Chief Jens Stoltenberg just ahead of a meeting of Allied defense ministers later this week.

"If Putin wins, it will not only be a defeat for Ukraine, but for all of us, and it will make the world more dangerous," Stoltenberg added. He called on the members of the alliance to continue supplying weapons, in particular armored vehicles and anti-aircraft defenses.

At the same time, NATO is apparently concerned that the West might not have enough modern weapons available in the medium term to protect itself adequately against aggressors such as Russia. "There just isn't enough," said a senior diplomat.

He justified this with the savings made by the states in the military sector, which automatically reduced arms production. Now the alliance wants to increase the goals for defense planning again, so that the industry also has planning security for future production.

Before the meeting of NATO defense ministers, Lithuania is committed to Ukraine joining the alliance. “Lithuania has always supported Ukraine's NATO membership. Over the past seven months, Ukraine has proven that it can effectively defend itself against Russia and curb Moscow's expansionism and revisionism. The country has shown that it would make the NATO alliance stronger," Deputy Defense Minister Margiris Abukevicius told WELT.

According to the Deputy Minister, Ukraine belongs to the “Euro-Atlantic community”. "I think it's a matter of time before the country will be a member of the EU and NATO." Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously called for his country's "accelerated" accession to NATO.

NATO meanwhile reiterated that it would begin its annual maneuvers to defend Alliance territory with nuclear weapons next week. The long-planned Steadfast Noon deterrence exercise is routine training to keep deterrence safe and effective, the NATO chief said.

The core of NATO's nuclear capabilities is always to keep the peace and prevent aggression. According to military experts, the Steadfast Noon maneuvers that regularly take place in October include practicing how to safely transport US nuclear weapons from underground magazines to the aircraft and mount them under the fighter jets.

However, the training flights are then flown without bombs. Stoltenberg called the covert nuclear threats made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine "dangerous and irresponsible".
