Trump kept classified documents on China and Iran in Mar-a-Lago

According to a media report, former US President Donald Trump also kept extremely confidential secret documents about China and Iran in his private residence. At least one of the documents seized in August by the US Federal Police FBI in the luxury Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida is about the Iranian missile program, the Washington Post reported on Friday, citing informed circles.

Other documents would describe "highly confidential intelligence work" on China. Accordingly, the documents provide insights into intelligence methods that the United States wants to keep secret from the rest of the world.

FBI investigators raided Mar-a-Lago on August 8 and confiscated around 11,000 documents. Among them were more than a hundred secret documents, some of which were classified as "top secret".

The US Department of Justice argues that Trump should have given the records to the National Archives after the end of his presidency instead of taking them to Mar-a-Lago. Outgoing US Presidents must in principle hand over all official documents to the National Archives. The Washington Post reported in August that one of the documents concerned another country's nuclear weapons.

Trump is suspected of violating an espionage law that sets strict standards for keeping national security documents. So far, however, he has not been formally charged in any way.

Trump has repeatedly described the Mar-a-Lago raid as politically motivated. He accuses President Joe Biden's Democrats of abusing the judiciary to prevent him from running for president again in 2024.
