Three days of ships and party - like before Corona

Back to normal for the first time: On the first weekend in May, the Hanseatic city is celebrating the 834th anniversary of its port. Visitors can not only look forward to the large arrival and departure parade with around 250 boats, as the organizer, the Hamburg Messe und Congress, announced on Tuesday.

Between the fish auction hall and the Elbphilharmonie, as well as in the Speicherstadt and out to Övelgönne, there will be hundreds of sports boats, traditional and museum ships, eight cruise ships, tall ships and emergency vehicles from May 5th to 7th - including the Polish sailing training ship "Dar Mlodziezy" and the "Alexander von Humboldt II" and the frigate "Hamburg". The Hanseatic city's godfather ship to the German Navy will lead the entry parade on Friday.

According to Hamburg's Economics Senator Melanie Leonhard (SPD), the port birthday is a very special celebration for the city. "The port is not only the economic center of Hamburg, but also our gateway to the world and part of our Hanseatic identity."

She is particularly pleased "that we can celebrate carefree again this year and welcome numerous guests from Germany and abroad," said Leonhard. In 2020 and 2021, the folk festival in the port was canceled due to the corona pandemic. Last year, the port birthday was celebrated in September instead of in May.

The free and freely accessible program on the three days also includes the famous tractor ballet, the fireworks, the demonstrations of modern and historical emergency vehicles in front of the Landungsbrücken and many other watercraft. There will also be several open-air stages with many concerts along the Elbe, and free concert broadcasts are planned at the Elbphilharmonie.

With guided tours on board and demonstrations of sailing maneuvers, the legendary "Peking" in the Hansahafen can also be experienced by all guests. The historic four-masted barque only returned to Hamburg in 2020 after 70 years abroad.

The Hamburg Port Birthday has been celebrated since 1977 and is considered one of the largest port festivals in the world. In the years before Corona, up to a million visitors came to the Elbe between Övelgönne and HafenCity. Last year, when the folk festival restarted, there were already around 800,000 visitors.
