Thomas de Maizière - "We are not experiencing a division in society"

The current President of the Church Congress and former Federal Defense Minister Thomas de Maizière (CDU) has countered fears that German Ukraine policy could drive a wedge into society. "We're a long way from a split," said de Maizière on Wednesday evening during a panel discussion in the "Exchange of Words" series in the evangelical market church in Hanover. The interlocutor was the designated President of the Church Congress 2025 in Hanover and former Thuringian Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund (Greens).

Under the motto of the Church Congress planned for June in Nuremberg "Now is the time!" de Maizière and Siegesmund spoke about political challenges in view of climate change and the war in Ukraine. Both agreed that Germany had to help the invaded country with arms. However, one moves in an ethical dilemma, emphasized the former defense minister. Because "delivering weapons leads to more deaths." The decision therefore requires humility, consideration and a broad controversy.

The opposition to the federal government's Ukraine policy, as formulated by the philosopher Jürgen Habermas, by Sahra Wagenknecht (left) or by AfD politicians, has had comparatively little resonance, said de Maizière. He misses the debate in society as a whole. Meanwhile, he perceives an "atomization" of society, resulting in social bubbles. The country has “too few common campfires” where people come together. Parties, churches and trade unions are fewer and fewer such places, lamented de Maizière. Meanwhile, mistrust of institutions and the media is growing.

With a view to the forthcoming church conferences, Siegesmund added that it is what Christians do to show and endure conflict in political issues. In view of the current crisis, people also have to talk about what gives them support and what values they stand on. In view of climate change, the former State Minister for the Environment emphasized that citizens could also "combat feelings of powerlessness through good action" in everyday life and on site. At the same time, there is a need for a "new generation contract" in terms of climate policy and the "issue of war and peace".
