These are the cheapest travel destinations in Europe

Just let your soul dangle and experience something new: A city trip is ideal for this. In view of the current inflation, however, many people no longer have the budget for an expensive holiday. In times like these, relaxation is all the more important.

A new study by the booking platform Omio shows that inexpensive travel is still possible. The German company, founded in 2012, examined 100 cities in Europe for free offers and inexpensive conditions for tourists. The focus was on:

Sun, hills and pure idyll: cheap travel to the Andalusian city of Granada can be so beautiful. Here holidaymakers have the choice between 112 activities and 60 sights that are free of charge - including the Alhambra, the symbol of the city. The approximately 740 meter long medieval castle complex has been a World Heritage Site since 1984 and offers a historical insight into the area as well as a wonderful view. A city tour with a city bus is also recommended. The fun only costs seven euros.

Granada's savings potential is also evident when it comes to nightlife. The city, which has a population of around 230,000, has over 80 bars and clubs to offer. In addition, the beer prices are very affordable, a bottle costs an average of 2.50 euros. Only two travel destinations in the ranking can beat this price - and they are also in Spain: In Murcia and Zaragoza, holidaymakers pay around EUR 2.00 and EUR 2.25 per beer, respectively.

As a picturesque backdrop, the medieval city of Bruges is well known to many from the film "See Bruges... and die?". In the heart of the Belgian province of West Flanders, not only film fans but also chocolate connoisseurs get their money's worth.

Some of the best chocolatiers in the world are based in Bruges, which is why some tours of the historic city revolve around the production of chocolate and pralines. Omio was able to find a total of 24 tours for less than 25 euros. Foodies with an instinct to save will also find inexpensive fast food options in Bruges. No visitor should miss out on a portion of Belgian fries.

Some readers will be amazed at the number three in the ranking. Expensive restaurants, gondola rides and high local transport prices make Venice seem like an expensive travel destination. According to Omio, holidaymakers can save a lot on a trip to the lagoon city with a few tricks.

Most of the sights such as St. Mark's Square and the Rialto Bridge can be visited free of charge. In addition, the capital of the Veneto region offers more than 290 free attractions, including 22 museums with free entry. The surprisingly high water prices at the tourist hotspots can easily be avoided thanks to the 186 public drinking water fountains in Venice. If you don't want to have dinner for two in a restaurant, you will also find inexpensive fast food options in the lagoon city.

Vacationers should be careful from next year. In response to the tourist rush, the city of Venice will introduce an entrance fee of ten euros for day visitors from 2023. However, the fee is waived if you book accommodation in the city.

A second Spanish city made it into the top five low-budget destinations: Valencia. All bargain hunters who long for beach holidays and city trips will get their money's worth here. Visitors to the metropolis, which is located directly on the Mediterranean Sea, can try out numerous inexpensive activities in the morning and relax on the beach in the afternoon.

Especially when it comes to food, Valencia has a wide range. In none of the top five travel destinations in the Omio ranking can holidaymakers dine as cheaply in a restaurant as here - on average, guests for two pay around 45 euros. If you want to make a stop in a bar or a club afterwards, you have the choice between 77 restaurants. Thanks to a total of 767 public drinking fountains in Valencia, tourists are also well supplied with water. What makes the city even more special: there is free WiFi in almost 6,000 places.

A historic stronghold, quaint streets and numerous second-hand bookshops give the city of Edinburgh a cozy atmosphere in blustery Scotland. The location is ideal for those interested in art and history: A total of 28 museums in Edinburgh offer free admission, including the National Museum of Scotland in the center of the old town.

In addition to the museums, there are a total of 112 free sights where many of the more than 100 inexpensive guided tours stop. City tours are available from eleven euros. To warm up at the end of the day, a Scottish whiskey helps in one of the city's 190 pubs, bars and clubs. If you prefer a beer, however, you have to expect higher prices than in Spain. Converted, a bottle costs 5.16 euros on average.

In a European comparison, Germany fares rather mediocre. The first German city can be found in 39th place in the Omio ranking of the cheapest travel destinations, namely Frankfurt (Main). This is followed by Nuremberg in 42nd place and Dresden in 45th place.

The German cities suddenly gather in the 50 ranks: Leipzig, Munich and Cologne follow one another and occupy places 51 to 53. Berlin just claws 60th place, Düsseldorf is six positions behind - and Hamburg weakens in 81st place List. But the greatest holiday mood comes when traveling abroad anyway.
