These 5 travel destinations are particularly popular with solo travelers

While it's still cold and gray in this country, you might get the wanderlust too. When planning your next vacation, not only the destination plays a role, but also how you travel. While package holidays are losing popularity, another type of travel is making a comeback: solo travel.

In particular, young Gen-Z between the ages of 18 and 24 are particularly excited about the idea of traveling the world solo. At least that is what a recent survey by OnePoll on behalf of the online travel agency Expedia confirms. For this purpose, a thousand adults in Germany who are planning a trip in Germany or abroad in the next 36 months were surveyed.

To be more precise, 35 percent plan a trip completely on their own. For comparison: in the overall average age it is only 27 percent. According to the Expedia survey, for the majority of Gen-Z their own well-being is the focus. At 42 percent, the main reasons for a solo trip are escaping everyday stress, followed by self-discovery (35 percent) and leaving one's own comfort zone (34 percent).

professor dr Ina zur Oven-Krockhaus, Head of Tourism Management Dual Studies at the IU International University, comes to a similar conclusion. "Young adults aged 18-24 want to gain their own experience when traveling," the expert explains to WELT. Being on your own boosts self-confidence. “Gen Z has different aspirations than older generations like baby boomers. Needs such as exclusive travel experiences, but also seclusion and relaxation are in the foreground. Then the lonely mountain hut without WiFi can become a place of longing.”

Solo travel does not automatically mean that you are always alone, according to the expert: “Various travel providers specialize in this target group and offer group travel with international like-minded people from all over the world to get to know new cultures. At the same time, this form of travel satisfies the need for safety and good value for money.”

But where do solo travelers prefer to go? Based on the search and booking inquiries of solo travelers on its website, the online travel agency Expedia has identified the five travel destinations that are particularly trendy in 2022 compared to 2019.

The country in Central America is particularly popular with backpackers. This is perhaps also due to the fact that Belize is extremely diverse: there are fantastic sandy beaches, lush rainforests and spectacular Mayan ruins to discover. Above all, the breathtaking nature and animal diversity on land and water attract many tourists. According to Expedia, demand for this destination among solo travelers has increased by 80 percent compared to three years ago.

In the best travel time between February and May you can expect temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. However, Belize is quite expensive: tourists should expect a daily budget of around 40 euros. This is much cheaper in neighboring Mexico.

Many dream of being able to observe the magical northern lights with their own eyes. This can be done, for example, in the Lofoten Islands, which belong to the Norwegian province of Nordland. The wild mountain landscape and the rough fjords do the rest. So it's no wonder that the natural idyll is very popular with solo travelers: the region recorded a 75 percent increase in demand among solo travelers compared to 2019.

Sand dunes like in the desert and then the sea comes straight away – visitors to Gran Canaria can expect this sight. The island is considered the most diverse of the Canary Islands. While the north is very green, the south is drier, more touristy and has plenty of great sandy beaches for sun-worshippers.

One community in particular is popular with solo travelers, with a 45 percent increase in demand: San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It extends to the southern area of the wide flight dunes of Maspalomas.

The many vintage cars and picturesque facades of the capital Havana are the epitome of Caribbean joie de vivre for some tourists. In addition, the inhabitants of the communist island state are very hospitable. Nature, beaches and the exciting history of the country probably arouse the interest of many solo travelers: Last year, 30 percent more solo travelers looked for Cuba than in 2019.

If you prefer to take it easy, you might find your dream travel destination on the Red Sea in Egypt. Numerous resorts in Hurghada score with all-inclusive, long beaches and lots of sun. But there is also a bit of action on offer: The Red Sea is one of the best diving grounds in the world. Snorkeling and diving are therefore a must. Compared to the pre-pandemic period, searches for this destination among individuals have increased by 20 percent, according to the latest Expedia analysis.
