The US Air Force is currently evaluating commercial rockets' ability to quickly transport logistic cargo anywhere in the globe, whether it be for military or humanitarian reasons.
The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), specifically, is investigating whether commercial rocket leasing can provide cost- and time-savings over existing air cargo operations. This could be useful in emergency and disaster situations, such as humanitarian aid and disaster response. The Space and Missile Systems Center will transition the Vanguard program to implementation if the program, Rocket Cargo Vanguard is successful.
This program will be focused on commercial rockets as well as test campaigns that can deliver up to 100 tonnes of cargo anywhere on the globe within short timeframes.
This new capability has the military utility of supporting the US Transportation Command (Ustrascom), a resupply mission. It can deliver faster and may be cheaper. Special airlift is possible to transport equipment and aid to disaster-stricken areas. Ustranscom says that a rocket-based space transport capability can be added to its air, ground, and sea logistics operations.
Logistical speed is the key to military supremacy. The Department of Defense should immediately get involved in the development of a commercial company's new capability to move materials faster. The Rocket Cargo program was started because of this fundamental motivation, according to the United States Air Force.
