The state pays – but the most important contribution now has to come from the citizen

200 billion euros for the gas price brake. In addition, around 100 billion for the relief packages 1 to 3. We note: The state is determined to protect its citizens from the worst financial hardship. But that alone is not enough. With all the relief packages for the Germans, the decisive message to the population is almost lost. It must read: Now it's your turn. Now you have to save energy. The state goes to the financial pain threshold. Now it is important that its citizens change their behavior when dealing with gas and electricity.

But before that can happen, we need to know how expensive it really is for us. Where does the state support? Where not? How much is it even worth saving energy? Anyone who reads the first proposals of the Gas Price Commission should get the feeling that "it won't be that bad".

You get the costs for December back. In the first few months of the next year, the lid will come on and then winter will almost be over. If millions of tenants then also receive their utility bills with a long delay, there are long periods of time between action and liability, which is not conducive to responsible action. There are no incentives to save.

Now the state has to communicate clearly and honestly how expensive it will be for each individual. And an answer is needed to the question: how much easier it will be for my wallet if I'm more frugal? That would be the start. The beginning of a fundamental change of mind - the conscious use of energy as a resource.

For this, however, a vehicle such as the gas price brake must be understandable. That is why we now need a revolution in the transparency of energy consumption. Everyone should be able to use an app to see what they are consuming, which will then also give them incentives to save. Sounds ambitious? It is. But we also know that crises are accelerators of innovation. This can also be the case with this energy transparency revolution.

The pressure is great because it's not just about your own wallet. It is also and above all about the security of supply in our country. We mustn't delude ourselves. The really hard and expensive winter will not be this one, but the next. State benefits will not and cannot last forever. Anyone who believes that the now almost full gas storage facilities are a sign of relaxation should be told: As soon as the heating season really starts, the storage levels will drop like a stone. In other words, every kilowatt hour saved helps.

When 84 million people turn down the heating, check their systems, use washing machines and dryers less often and identify power guzzlers. All of this will have an effect. Many may find such demands petty, tiresome, or patronizing. But there is no alternative to these measures.

Saves energy. Save them for monetary reasons or save them for society. For the country. Now every measure helps. Every kilowatt hour.
