The National Lace Meeting was back in force

Yesterday, the Santiago Hospital hosted the twenty-first edition National Lace Meeting. It returned last year after a period of absence due to the pandemic. The Association of Lacemakers of Ubeda and the City Council, together with their help, brought back precious work to flood the cultural center.

The event is a huge success and has a lot of participation. It aims to recognize the hard work of those who make lace in Spain. This tradition has survived the years and has been enjoyed by all ages and genders. The organization created a special tribute for men who participated in the meeting and awarded Victor Poveda, Antonio Terron, Jose Luis Hidalgo Ruiz.

This edition saw around 500 participants, many of them from all parts of Spain. It is, unsurprisingly, one of the most well-known and consolidated meetings in Andalusia specializing in this topic. The prizes were awarded yesterday. According to them, Puertollano was the winner and Fraga came in second. Virtudes Gomez-Aibar, the oldest lacemaker, was also honored. The PUIG house gave a gift to the first 150 participants. All participants received a 'picado,' which Elena Diaz made, for making a purse.

The meeting featured bobbin lacing, an exhibition of work, a tatting workshop and a patchwork workshop. There was also a market that sold all the necessary products to create these amazing lace works of art.

A photographic contest was still being held one more year. It reached its fifth edition. The Wide Angle Association promoted it as a contest mode and promoted it. The Association of Lacemakers in the city will choose one from all submitted photos to illustrate the announcement poster for the 2023 edition. All material will be displayed in an additional exhibition.

Solidarity was also a key theme of the appointment. Therefore, a table was set up for non-perishable food, personal hygiene, and household cleaning products to be collected for Caritas.

Antonia Olivares the Mayor of Ubeda welcomed all present, accompanied by Magdalena Urrutia the Councilor for Citizen Participation. She stressed that the meeting is attractive for the city's agenda but also that it is a dynamic activity for cultural, economic, and commercial reasons. Many of the participants stay in hotels and shop in the city's shops.
