The majority of Germans fear a drop in their standard of living

Almost three quarters of citizens (74 percent) are “worried” about the future or are even “very afraid”. This is the result of a representative survey by the credit agency Schufa, which is exclusively available to WELT AM SONNTAG. Even during the entire corona pandemic, citizens have never been as pessimistic as they are now.

The mood has clouded over, especially among higher earners. In households with a net income of more than 4,000 euros per month, 68 percent of those surveyed name great or very great fears about the future - and thus only slightly less than in the lowest income groups.

The fear of further price increases (84 percent) is particularly great in all areas of life. But concerns about falling incomes (60 percent) and unemployment (44 percent) have increased again compared to the corona pandemic. According to the survey, almost every second citizen (47 percent) will find it increasingly difficult to maintain their previous standard of living in the coming year. A total of 1000 people were interviewed between October 7th and 14th for the representative survey.

The opposition sees the government as responsible. "The federal government is making a massive contribution to consumer uncertainty with its ongoing and protracted disputes," said Steffen Bilger, deputy leader of the Union in the Bundestag, WELT AM SONNTAG. “It is still not clear when exactly the gas and electricity price brakes will take effect,” complains the CDU politician. And because the nuclear power plants are no longer running, electricity prices will remain high, Bilger fears.
