During the corona pandemic, hardly any other industry was hit as hard as the tourism industry. After two extremely difficult years, in which the number of overnight stays fell to less than half of the usual level, tourism in the Hanseatic city has recovered significantly.
In 2022 Hamburg counted 14.7 million overnight stays. That was almost twice as many tourist overnight stays as in 2021 and almost as many as in 2019 when there were 15.4 million overnight stays.
Hamburg's Economics Senator Melanie Leonhard (SPD) spoke of a "quite impressive development". The balance is "a good sign" for the tourism industry, but also for the whole city. The head of Hamburg Tourismus Michael Otremba said that Hamburg is perceived very positively, especially in Germany, "and enjoys the reputation of being a special place of longing".
For the current year, the city expects a further increase in the number of overnight stays. According to Economics Senator Leonhard, it is likely that the figures will not rise again as strongly as they did in 2019. That was already the most successful year for tourism in Hamburg, which has announced new visitor records every year since 2002 and up to the beginning of the corona pandemic.
The fact that Hamburg is once again moving towards records is also due to the fact that international guests are returning to the Hanseatic city. The numbers in 2022 were only around 80 percent of the pre-crisis level. However, the city recorded the highest growth in international guests.
The 1.3 million foreign tourists meant an increase of almost 160 percent compared to 2021. And the overnight stays booked by them also recorded a jump of 146 percent at a good three million.
Most foreign tourists in Hamburg in 2022 came from Denmark (372,800 overnight stays), followed by the Swiss (305,600 overnight stays) and Austrians (263,000 overnight stays). The city regularly surveys its guests to find out more about the reasons for traveling to Hamburg.
For example, while the Scandinavians come to Hamburg mainly because of the entertainment options, many Americans come to the Hanseatic city for congresses. "Among the French, five percent come extra for HSV," said tourism boss Otremba.
Now the city still has to get through the rather uneventful month of February. Experience has shown that business in the tourism industry picks up again from March. The tourism year will experience its first high point in May, when the 834th port anniversary is celebrated. In September there will be Cruise Days again, followed shortly after by the Reeperbahn Festival.
In October, Hamburg will then host the Day of German Unity. Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) is President of the Federal Council this year and thus the organizer of the big festival of the federal states. Otremba is expecting 500,000 visitors for this occasion alone.
In the long term, Hamburg also wants to use its reputation as a city on the water even more and establish itself as a destination for river boat trips, for example. Otremba announced on Tuesday that in future they would also like to focus more on marketing Hamburg as a food city. “There is an unbelievable amount of movement in the field of culinary art. We believe there is a lot possible for Hamburg.”
Last but not least, the corona pandemic recognized that tourism and culture in Hamburg had to be thought of much more together. As announced last year, cultural tourism is to be promoted.
