"The border regime by the federal police must be strengthened quickly"

The prognosis is urgent and the criticism clear. The migration researcher Gerald Knaus expects a massive increase in the number of refugees in the coming months because of the Ukraine war.

"We are facing a historic winter of flight if the situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate and the supply of heat and electricity does not work in winter because the Russian war of aggression destroys power plants or uses weapons of mass destruction," Knaus told the newspapers of the Funke media group. "The EU would not be prepared for that now."

The sociologist from Austria, who lives in Berlin, criticized that those seeking protection from Ukraine were still very unequally distributed in Europe: "Countries like the Czech Republic and Poland bear the brunt, countries like France have taken in a fraction of the war refugees."

More European solidarity is needed here. It is not only necessary between the states, but also large cities and municipalities have to build up a network in which the refugees can also be accepted in France or Italy.

The opposition in the Bundestag also sees a need for action: “The federal government must above all ensure order and limit illegal immigration via the Balkan route and the German-Czech border. Because that's where most illegal border crossings are at the moment," said the domestic spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Alexander Throm (CDU), WELT. “To do this, the border regime must be quickly strengthened by the federal police. The Minister of the Interior shines through inactivity here."

But the flight path is Serbia. Because many people from third countries could enter here without a visa and start their onward journey to Germany from there. Here the federal government must speak plainly with Serbia so that this practice is ended. "Anyone who wants to go to the EU must also accept the EU's visa system," said Throm.

"And finally, the traffic light government must end its special German path in migration policy. All European countries limit illegal immigration, only Germany opens the door to this. This wrong-way traffic light set out in the coalition agreement must be stopped.”

AfD party and faction leader Tino Chrupalla called for changes to state benefits for refugees from Ukraine: "The betterment of Ukrainian war refugees with immediate access to Hartz IV benefits or 'citizen's allowance' must be corrected urgently. This also lures Ukrainians who have already found work and admission in other countries into the German social system,” criticized Chrupalla.

“In view of the alarming increase in illegal border crossings, permanent border controls must be set up immediately and illegal migrants consistently turned away. Chancellor Olaf Scholz must make these measures a top priority.”

Concerns are also growing in the traffic light coalition: "We need a vote at both national and European level," said Stephan Thomae, parliamentary director of the FDP parliamentary group, WELT.

It is now taking revenge that the desired Common European Asylum System has “not made any progress” in recent years. "We now need a European migration summit as soon as possible in order to create clear rules on how Europe will deal with this and future refugee movements."

In addition, there is an urgent need for agreements at national level. It is therefore good that Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) invited to the refugee summit, which is scheduled to take place in the first half of the month. Municipalities should be involved as soon as possible.

"The goal must also be to distribute the refugees fairly among the federal states that still have capacity, and to achieve an appropriate distribution of the accommodation costs for the refugees between the federal states and the federal government."

The SPD, on the other hand, sees Germany armed for the coming months: "The number of people seeking protection with us is not only increasing as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. The well-known escape routes, such as via the Western Balkans, are also showing increasing numbers," said SPD parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese.

This is currently a major challenge for many cities and communities. "In contrast to 2015, however, we are prepared." The police at the borders are also doing an excellent job.
