Test vehicle was not driving autonomously in the fatal collision

According to the investigators, the test vehicle involved in a fatal accident in the Swabian Jura was not driving autonomously. The public prosecutor's office and the police came to this conclusion on Wednesday after examining the BMW test vehicle. One person died in the collision on Monday and nine others were seriously injured. The investigation into the cause of the accident continued.

Modern driver assistance systems of the so-called level 2 are installed in the test vehicle. They already exist in many production vehicles and, if desired, support the driver in keeping in lane and keeping distance. In Level 2 vehicles, the driver always remains responsible.

In the further investigation, it must now be clarified whether the driver had his hands on the wheel, as a police spokesman said. The data read from the test vehicle would have to be evaluated and the driver questioned. "It takes time." Three experts, specialists from the Tübingen traffic police and the LKA, as well as engineers from the manufacturer, were involved in the assessment of the car.

In a first report the morning after the accident, the police spoke of an “autonomous e-test vehicle” of the BMW iX type. According to their own statements, the investigators had given this information because of certain stickers on the vehicle. A BMW spokesman said these stickers are standardized to identify test vehicles that take camera footage. Level 2 assistance systems are installed in the car. Only in the case of highly automated vehicles from level 3 and higher can the driver hand over control completely to the car under certain conditions.

The accident occurred on federal highway 28. According to the police, the 43-year-old driver of the test car was traveling with four other people on board near Römerstein in the Reutlingen district. In a curve, the car came into the oncoming lane and grazed a car. The car then crashed head-on into another car. This vehicle also left the roadway and immediately caught fire. The test car collided with another car. The 33-year-old passenger in that car suffered fatal injuries.
