SPD candidate wins mayoral election in Cottbus

SPD candidate Tobias Schick clearly prevailed against AfD candidate Lars Schieske in the mayoral election in Cottbus. The 41-year-old Schick received 68.6 percent of the votes in the run-off election on Sunday, Schieske got 31.4 percent.

Schieske congratulated Schick on Sunday evening after about three quarters of the votes had been counted. The election was eagerly awaited because it also involves the question of whether the AfD will have a mayor for the first time in Germany or not.

Around 79,000 Cottbus residents were called to vote. In the first round of voting, Schick got 31.8 percent and Schieske 26.4 percent. The CDU, Greens, Left and FDP then promised Schick their support for the runoff.

The still incumbent CDU Mayor Holger Kelch did not appear for health reasons. His successor will take office on November 30th. The second largest city in Brandenburg is facing a new structural change. According to the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution, it is the focus of right-wing extremism in the state.
