SPA: massive abandonments this summer, more than 16,000 animals collected, especially cats

“This year, we had a drop of almost 10% in adoptions in the first half of the year, which weighed on us. We started the summer with 7,000 animals in our shelters, whereas on May 1st we are usually at 3,500. which allowed us to absorb the summer wave with less difficulty," Jacques-Charles Fombonne, president of the SPA, told AFP on Thursday.

"We refused to take in animals whose masters came to abandon them and we told them to wait until September. However, we placed some of them in our 2,000 foster families," he added.

Mr. Fombonne warns about the vigilance to be observed when acquiring certain fashionable dogs which require experienced masters for "responsible adoption", i.e. around 30% of its residents.

"We have 500 to 600 dogs that are not aggressive dogs but animals that need to be stimulated and be present with their master, such as the Malinois, a sporting dog often used by the military. We refuse to give this type of dogs to people who will not be able to take care of them to prevent them from returning to our shelters. This is also the case for the Australian Shepherd or the American Staffordshire Terrier", he explains.

On a positive note, however, the summer period was marked by a slight increase in adoptions of 1.2% compared to 2021 and more particularly concerning dogs (4.5%).

As of August 31, the SPA had 7,808 animals present in its structures, or 7% compared to the previous year.

And to fight against mistreatment, the SPA has reinforced the means of its investigations department, which was "more active than ever" in the months of June, July and August with 7,796 investigations carried out in the field - i.e. 3 times more than in 2021.
