Social Association President Bentele calls for hardship funds for "exploding costs"

The president of the social association VdK, Verena Bentele, has spoken out in favor of setting up a hardship fund until the proposed gas price brake takes effect. People must be protected from the "explosive costs", Bentele warned in the newspapers of the Essen Funke media group (Tuesday). “But the gas price brake will not come until March or April. By then, many people will have to freeze in their homes.” Help from a hardship fund is now needed for everyone who cannot cope with their gas deductions despite a payment scheduled for December. "This must come for those in need later this year."

Bentele welcomed the proposal presented on Monday by the commission of experts on the gas price brake to take over all of the advance payments for private households in December. "It is an unbureaucratic and quick solution in the sense of the VdK not to carry out lengthy individual case checks here."

With a one-off state payment in December and a subsequent gas price brake, the expert commission convened by the federal government wants to relieve citizens and industry of the high energy costs. The prices should drop to twelve cents per kilowatt hour through the government subsidy - but only for 80 percent of the estimated previous consumption in order to continue to provide an incentive to save, it said on Monday when the interim report of the so-called gas commission in Berlin was presented. For the industry there should be a price cap from January. The Federal Government must decide on the implementation of the Commission's proposals.

The members of the Commission estimate the cost of their proposal at 90 to 95 billion euros, around 65 billion euros of which would benefit households and small businesses, 25 billion euros for industry.
