Six times more goats than inhabitants: the mayor of an Italian island suggests that his citizens adopt them

Alicudi Island is an idyllic piece of land, part of the Aeolian Archipelago, off the coast of Sicily. Emerging from an extinct volcano, Alicudi also has 100 inhabitants... for 600 wild goats. Arriving on the island almost 20 years ago, they quickly multiplied and are now proliferating at an endemic rate, reports Corriere della Sera on Monday, April 1.

Consequently, living together between the goats and the inhabitants, which has long been harmonious, begins to become complicated. Undomesticated, they threaten the island's flora by damaging vegetation, gardens and vegetable plots, and even enter private properties... enough to make the islanders completely goofy!

To remedy these inconveniences, the mayor of the island, Riccardo Gallo, had an innovative idea: residents will be able to adopt goats for free, in order to domesticate them. To participate, simply apply to the town hall. The mayor specifies that there are no restrictions on the quantity of goats that can be adopted. It is therefore not necessary to be a farmer to contribute to the domestication of these wild animals.

Residents of Alicudi have until April 10 to apply. According to the councilor, there are already many interested people, including “a breeder, producer of ricotta, who would like to take several goats”.
